Western Cape Reports 82% Cattle Vaccination Coverage in FMD Response

The Western Cape has vaccinated 82% of its bovine population against foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), according to a report by Politicsweb. The update was attributed to the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the province.

The figure covers the province's cattle herd and signals progress in the regional response to the outbreak. Politicsweb published the report on Sunday, 30 August 2026, citing the DA's provincial structure.

The vaccination drive is part of a broader national effort to contain FMD. In a separate report, SABC News noted that KwaZulu-Natal's agriculture department is also intensifying its vaccination campaign. That province has ramped up its own rollout to curb the spread of the viral disease among livestock.

FMD is a highly contagious disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals, including cattle, sheep, and pigs. Outbreaks typically lead to movement restrictions and trade bans, which can hit farmers' incomes and disrupt meat supply chains. Vaccination is a key tool in limiting transmission and protecting herds from severe clinical signs.

The Western Cape's 82% coverage suggests a significant share of the province's cattle have received at least one dose. However, the remaining 18% still leaves a portion of the herd unprotected, which could pose a risk if the virus continues to circulate.

With KwaZulu-Natal also stepping up its efforts, the focus now shifts to whether other provinces can match or exceed these vaccination rates. Watch for further updates from provincial agriculture departments on coverage milestones and any changes to livestock movement restrictions.
